Hanseatic League (Hansa) - The former trade and political union of cities in northern Germany, Prussia and Livonia was founded in Lubeck. By the beginning of the XV century, Hansa united about 160 cities from 10 countries. The members of the union developed a safe logistic and navigation system: they built lighthouses, trained sailors, jointly defended their convoys from pirates, controlled trade in Northern Europe: received trade privileges, created trading bases. Kaunas is the only one Hanseatic city in Lithuania. Under the reign of Casimir Jagiellonchik in Kaunas, the Hanseatic City Chamber of Commerce was established, which had the right to set up warehouses in Kaunas.
